FBI: Most Crime On The Decline In Baltimore

Tuesday, May 24, 2011 – Scott Wykoff and Associated Press

Baltimore saw a drop in most crimes last year.

Data released by the FBI on Monday show violent crime in Baltimore last year declined 3.6 percent from 2009. It also shows a 3 percent drop in property crime. Meanwhile, violent crime dropped 5.5 percent nationally and property crimes fell 2.8 percent.

The number of homicides in Baltimore fell from 238 to 223, the lowest since the late 1980s. Robberies declined from 3,707 to 3,336.

However, the number of rapes recorded in the city increased 67 percent, from 158 to 265. Police say much of that increase is due to a change in the way rapes were classified following a city audit that showed misclassifications of rapes.
