A former Kent County, Delaware sheriff has been charged following a four-hour standoff with police at his home last week.

Dover police charged 58-year-old James Higdon on Thursday with possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited, terroristic threatening and resisting arrest.

He was released after posting $3,000 bail on the charges, as well as $1,000 bail on a state police charge of violating a protection from abuse order.

Higdon was arrested last Wednesday when police tried to serve him a warrant for the violating the protection from abuse order.

He refused to leave his home or allow police to enter, and the standoff ensued.

Higdon threatened to shoot himself as well as police, who eventually forced their way into the home and took him into custody.
