The Position: The La Plata Police Department is seeking a Police Captain to be an integral part of an active growing agency of one civilian and 18 sworn employees. The Department performs patrol, investigative, emergency management, and many other law enforcement functions. The agency also works closely with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police – La Plata Barrack.
The agency enjoys a very good relationship with Town residents, business owners, and home owner associations. Officers routinely attend neighborhood meetings, participate in special events hosted by the Town and supports a plethora of other events held by civic organizations, local businesses, non-profits, as well as other governmental partners.
The La Plata Police Department is dedicated to a community policing philosophy, which includes finding holistic solutions to both crime and quality of life issues. The agency also has numerous community policing initiatives that can be found on the agency’s website.
La Plata’s current population is estimated to be just under 10,000, with anticipated planned growth to approximately 25,000. In an effort to efficiently and effectively serve a growing population, the agency has entered into a contract with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA). Using the CALEA model of law enforcement’s best practices, the agency will have both short and long range plans to safely manage a growing populous.
The La Plata Town Council has made a significant investment in improving the agency’s technology capabilities, as well as other vital equipment. Recently, the agency replaced and/or upgraded its in-car cameras, computers, and computer programs and records management system. Although not implemented yet, officers will soon be equipped with personal body cameras.
The Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate will demonstrate the highest level of integrity and be a part of a professional law enforcement management team in a growing community. The candidate must be able to work effectively to continuously improve police operations and public safety. The ideal candidate will be open and frank, a clear communicator to multiple audiences and be visible in the community.
The ideal candidate will earn the respect of staff, elected officials, Town management, members of the public, and colleagues in the law enforcement community. He/she will be skilled in all areas of police operations, crime prevention, patrol, investigations, administration, and emergency preparedness.
The ideal candidate will combine community policing, effective use of technology and partnering with other community and law enforcement organizations to provide the best services for residents and visitors to the Town.
The Requirements: La Plata seeks a skilled police professional with at least 60 credits from an accredited university in criminal justice, public administration or a related field, or who has an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Graduation from the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute or equivalent are preferred qualifications. The candidate must hold or have the ability to hold a certification through the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission.
The hiring range for the next Police Captain is $78,430 to $98,040 (maximum of range $117,645) and is supplemented by an outstanding benefits package.
