Number Crunching Time In Howard County

Thursday, March 17, 2011 – Steve Fermier and Associated Press

Howard County residents and organizations are hoping local officials keep what they want in the budget for the next fiscal year.

Libraries and homeless services were among the topics mentioned Wednesday night before County Executive Ken Ulman at the executive’s public budget hearing. Some Howard County library employees cited an increase in borrowed items in 2010, while other parents also called for an increase in library funding.

Ulman is scheduled to announce his budget proposals next month, and the County Council must adopt a plan by June 1.

The county is dealing with limited revenue after two years of cuts, including two years of unpaid furloughs for county workers.
