State Jobless Rate Holds Steady

State officials say the unemployment rate in Maryland remained the same from April to May at 6.8%.

Labor Secretary Alexander Sanchez said that Maryland lost 15,300 private sector jobs, but some of those losses were offset by the federal government adding 1,400 jobs in Maryland, nearly all related to military jobs that are moving to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Fort Meade as part of the federal base realignment.

Sanchez did say an additional 1,900 people found work during the month.

Sanchez says May was the 16th straight month that the state’s unemployment rate either dropped or held steady.

The national unemployment rate for May was 9.1%
