Baltimore County Sees Jump In Murders

The number of murders in Baltimore County for the year just ended is up by 50 percent.

Police department spokeswoman Elise Armacost tells WBAL News there were thirty homicides in all compared with 20 homicides the year before.

That compared with the homicide number for the city for last year…the city seeing a decrease by about 12 percent.

City police investigated 196 murders in 2011…a figure that represents a 34 year low for that category of crime.

Overall crime increased a scant 1 percent in the city of Baltimore last year with property crimes climbing by 4 percent.

Baltimore County has more people than the city at more than 800-thousand.

The city’s last census put the population at over 620-thousand.
