Brother Vernon Redding
On June 15, 2023, Vernon Leroy Redding, Sr., of Forest Hill, MD, passed away of natural causes to be with Father God at the age of 83.
Born January 5, 1940, in Baltimore at St. Agnes Hospital, he was the son of the late Vernon Albert and Margaret Grace (Cullings) Redding. He was the husband of the late Carolyn Sue (Howell) Redding who passed away in 2005.
Vernon graduated from Franklin High School, class of 1958. In his early years, he worked at Tollgate Esso in Owings Mills, MD. At the age of 23, he applied and was accepted into the Baltimore County Police Department. Vernon spent most of his career with the police department. He retired in 1984 after earning the rank of Lieutenant. During his career, he was twice presented with Police Officer of the Year, one from the Lions Club and one from the Kiwanis Club, along with a Recognition Award for Outstanding Public Service from the Baltimore Sun Paper. Vernon also received awards for Service Above and Beyond the Call of Duty from the Baltimore County Police. After retiring from the police department, he was employed by the State of Maryland in the Division of Parole and Probation. In 1997, he and his late wife moved to Florida where he worked on a golf course for sixteen years before moving back north to the state of Delaware. Vernon lived in Forest Hill, MD, for the last several years with his dog, Tucker, and his cat, Trinity, in the same neighborhood with his son, Duane, and his family. He spent holidays and special events with them. He was surrounded by his beloved pets for his whole life.
His favorite church was the Meadowbrook Church of Ocala that he attended in Florida. He was a member of the Moose and a faithful member of the Baltimore County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #4.
He is survived by his three sons, Vernon Leroy Redding, Jr. and wife Lynn of Felton, Delaware, Duane Stephen Redding and wife Lisa of Forest Hill, MD, and Michael Allen Redding of Westminster, MD. He is also survived by five grandchildren, John Redding and wife Jennifer, Lauren (Redding) Sax and husband Tom, Christopher Redding, Gabrielle Redding, and Juliette Redding. He is also survived by four great grandchildren, Wyatt, Hudson, Thomas, and Nicholas. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Shawn Ashley Redding, in 2005.
Funeral services will be held at Schimunek Funeral Home, 610 W MacPhail Road, Bel Air, MD, on Saturday, June 24th. The viewing will be at 11:00 AM. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the following animal shelters: bmorehumane.kindful.com, Maryland SPCA, Last Chance Animal Rescue, or Small Miracles Cat and Dog Rescue.
