The Department regrets to announce the passing of retired Corporal Herbert “Herbie” L. Hughes, on July 14, 2024.

Herbie Hughes began his dedicated service with the department on November 18, 1967. After graduating from the Academy in April of ‘68, he was assigned to the Wilkens Precinct. Following his promotion to Corporal on April 27, 1974, Herbie briefly transferred to the Woodlawn Precinct before returning to Wilkens a year later. He spent the remainder of his 22-year career on the west side of Baltimore County, retiring on June 29, 1985.

Herbie was known for his integrity and great sense of humor, earning him respect and admiration from his colleagues. With a fondness for sports, he managed and played in the Wilkens Police Softball League – rumor has it, he was pretty good too. After retiring from the force, Herbie continued his public service by working for the United States Postal Service. An avid golfer, Herbie found the perfect way to enjoy his retirement: spending days on the fairways in the Sunshine State. He and his wife, Arlene, spent their golden years soaking up the sun in Lake County, Florida, cherishing life together until his passing on July 14th at the age of 82.

The Department extends its deepest condolences to the family of Corporal Herbert “Herbie” L. Hughes.
