U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations took custody of a 35-year-old from El Salvador for eventual deportation last week after he was convicted of negligent manslaughter in Baltimore County.
Edwin Amaya-Rivera will be in ICE custody until being transported back to El Salvador, according to a Wednesday news release from ERO. Authorities first encountered Amaya-Rivera in 2005, the release said, after he entered the country at an unknown time and place.
Amaya-Rivera was convicted in 2023 for a vehicular manslaughter incident the year before. In addition to being found guilty of negligent vehicular manslaughter, he was also convicted of a traffic violation.
His listed residence on the Maryland Judiciary’s Case Search website was in Laurel. After pleading guilty, he was sentenced to 10 years, suspending all but four years, with five years of probation and ordered to pay nearly $12,000 in restitution, Case Search shows.
