Both of the major candidates for governor received endorsements today.
Former Republican Rep. Wayne Gilchrest endorsed Governor O’Malley and the Maryland Fraternal Order of Police endorsed former Governor Ehrlich.
Gilchrest, a moderate Republican, commended O’Malley on Tuesday for his environmental policies.
“Governor Ehrlich has proven throughout his years in public service that he is a strong supporter of law enforcement and law enforcement issues,” Maryland FOP Executive Board member Mike Young said.
It’s not the first time Gilchrest has crossed party lines to endorse a Democrat. After Gilchrest lost in the GOP’s 2008 primary to state Sen. Andrew Harris, he endorsed Democrat Frank Kratovil, who ended up barely defeating Harris.
Gilchrest held Maryland’s 1st District congressional seat that includes the Eastern Shore for nine terms.
The Maryland Fraternal Order of Police has nearly 20,000 members statewide.
