Guilty Verdict In Bear-Bear Shooting

An Anne Arundel County judge has found a federal police officer guilty of shooting and killing a Siberian Husky in a dog park last summer.The judge returned the verdict Friday afternoon after a hearing for Keith Shepherd.

The civilian officer who works for the Department of Defense says he thought the dog “Bear-Bear” was attacking his dog when he pulled out his service revolver and shot the dog dead.

The incident occurred last August at the Quail Run Dog Park in Severna Park.

Shepherd was found guilty of misdemeanor Animal Cruelty – Inflicting Unnecessary Suffering and Pain to an animal. 

That charge carries a fine of $1,000 or a 90-day jail term. 

He was also charged with discharging a Firearm within 100 yards of an occupied structure. 

That charge carries with it a $1,000 fine or six month jail term.

The judge recommended probation before judgement.

Ryan Rettaliata, who owned Bear-Bear, told WBAL News that he is “very happy” with the verdict.
