The lodge regrets to announce the passing of John E. Ables, father of Sergeant Brian Ables and father-in-law of Officer Jessica Ables.
John Edward Ables, age 78, of Bel Air, Maryland, formerly of Weston, WV, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at his residence. He was born in Weston on October 8, 1943, son of the late Mary Virginia (Keith) Ables of Weston and the late Thomas Williams Ables, Sr., of Ohio. On August 6, 1966, he married the former Judith Kay (Mick) Ables, who survives.
John is survived by two sons, Brian Edward Ables and wife Jessica of PA and Keith Michael Ables and wife Bethany of Bel Air, MD. He is survived by six grandchildren: Bailey and Carleigh Ables of PA; Lance, Savannah, Weston Ables; and Connor Gomez of Bel Air, MD. He is survived by sisters-in-law Valerie Donaldson of Bel Air, MD, Audrey (Glenn) Brown of Weston, WV, and brother-in-law Pete (Lou Ann) Mick of Weston, WV. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by one sister, Karen Sue Ables, one brother, Thomas William Ables, Jr. and sister-in-law Gloria Ables. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is also survived by his niece, Kimberly (Ables) Ryan and husband Thomas of Pittsburgh, PA, nephews, Michael Ables and wife Danetta of VA, and Christopher Ables of Florida.
John was a 1961 graduate of Weston High School. He retired from General Motors/Allison Transmission in Baltimore, MD., with 50 years of service. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. His hobbies were watching the grandchildren play sports, reading books, and reading the Baltimore Sun newspaper. He served in the US Army for three years after graduating high school.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at Schimunek Funeral Home of Bel Air on Sunday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 pm, where a funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM. A committal service will occur Monday, March 14, 2022 at 11:00 AM at West Virginia National Veteran Cemetery, 42 Veterans Memorial Lane, Grafton, WV 26354.
