The Maryland Press Club is presenting WBAL’s Ron Smith with a lifetime achievement award.

Phil Housmer, the club vice president and Bob Roll, the club treasurer presented the award today to fill-in host Marta Mossburg and WBAL political analyst Blair Lee.

“We have been listeners and we just figured now is the right time to honor Ron’s career,” Housmer said on WBAL today.

The press club is honoring Ron for a more than 40 year journalism career that included seven years as a news anchor on WBAL-TV, and 27 years as a talk show host on WBAL Radio.

Ron retired from his on-air duties last month when he announced he was beginning home hospice care.  He announced in October that he was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Ron remains at his home in Pennsylvania surrounded by his family and friends, and he told WBAL News this week that he is making an effort to respond to as many of the cards, letters and emails he has received over the last few weeks.

… Congrats. to “Mr. Reason.” …
