Mayor Wants Independent Review Of Fatal Shooting

Wednesday, January 12, 2011 – Anne Kramer
Baltimore’s Mayor is now looking for an outside agency to do an independent review of the shooting that took the life of a police officer, an unarmed man and injured four others.

The shooting outside the Select Lounge on Paca Street started police say as officers were trying to break up a fight.

Officer William Torbitt was killed during that shooting.

Commissioner Fred Bealefeld says 41 rounds were fired all from officer’s weapons during the fight.

Another man was killed. Four others including another police officer were injured.

Bealefeld expects the investigation to take three weeks.

A spokesman for the Mayor confirms to WBAL Radio that the independent review will start once the police department investigation is complete.
