Move To Cut Speed Cameras In The City

Tuesday, August 16, 2011 – Steve Fermier
The push for speed cameras at school zones in the city could be losing momentum.

The City Council now has before it a motion that would eliminate speed cameras.

The cameras have been clicking away at school speed zones for months.

Revenues are on the increase.

But Councilwoman Belinda Conaway does not think even so the cameras are bringing down speeds.

Drivers who go 12 miles an hour or more over the posted limit get a letter with a $40 fine.

She wants the cameras gone.

The cameras are supported by police who say they do provide an extra margin of safety and by politicians who see money helping finances during a shaky economy.

It’s not clear how much support the measure has on the Council.

… Make up our minds. …
