Baltimore police officers serving a warrant on a man wanted in a minor crime said they stumbled on a stash house in Mount Vernon where more than 8 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $25,000 on the street were being stored.

Detective Jeremy Silbert said the rowhouse where the drugs were found on Monday is in the 800 block of Cathedral St., near the Baltimore School for the Arts and Mount Vernon Park, where a holiday lighting festival is scheduled at the Washington Monument on Thursday.

Police said officers with the Warrant Apprehension Task Force were looking for a man wanted for failing to appear in court on a drug charge. Silbert, a city police spokesman, said the officers arrested the man when he answered the door.

Seeing suspected drugs, Silbert said officers obtained a warrant and members of the Violent Crime Impact Section searched the rowhouse, near West Madison Street, and found what he said were 8 pounds of marijuana and a large amount of cash.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released pending the filing of formal charges related to the drug seizure.
