Prince George’s County police said officers shot and killed a man who went toward police with an ax outside an in-home day care facility.

Police said they were called to the day care in Glenn Dale about 3 p.m. Thursday. Officers said the man was trying to take his children from the day care, but the provider called the mother, who told the provider not to give children to the father.

The day-care provider called police. The man, who had left before officers arrived, returned shortly after.

Police said the man got out of his car carrying an ax and moved toward three officers. One officer shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

The incident is under investigation.
