Friday, March 04, 2011 – Scott Wykoff and Associated Press
The U.S. Marshals Service says a man believed to be responsible for rapes and other attacks on 17 women in Maryland and other states since 1997 and dubbed the East Coast Rapist has been arrested in Connecticut.

U.S. Marshal Joe Faughnan in New Haven says the man was detained Friday afternoon.

The man’s name hasn’t been released. Faughnan said Friday he didn’t have any further details.

Authorities recently started posting sketches of the suspect on electronic billboards in states where attacks occurred including Maryland, Connecticut, Virginia and Rhode Island.

Several billboards were located in Baltimore City showing the sketch of the suspect.

The most recent attack occurred in northern Virginia in 2009, where he was almost caught when a victim was able to send a text message to her mother calling for help.
